Hi

So you’ve got an iPhone at a carrier other than AT&T, but would still like to get your voicemail? You are just as demanding as I am, but luckily there is a solution for us. You can set the voice mail button to auto-dial a preset number that connects you to your voicemail service. This however still doesn’t solve the issue of not getting notified by SMS when I receive a voicemail, but still a step forward in the iPhone mystery world….

Carry on reading for the fix….

Go to the dial screen on your iPhone, and dial the following string, then press CALL.

*5005*86*YOURVOICEMAILNUMBER#

In my case, it was the following, as my voice mail number is 170:

*5005*86*170#

Once you do that, please CALL, and it will set your voice mail number to it’s memory. There should be some message about this. From now and on, whenever you press the Voice Mail button, you will get a screen like this minus the dog in the background :) :

….and you should be connected to your voicemail.

Happy Voice Mailing :) and hope for a day when we can even get notified by SMS of awaiting voice mails….

Do we need to have a voicemail service activated from the service provider ? How to setup personal greetings for voice mail as I could not see any option under setting to do this.

My appreciate if someone can help.

    Thanks

  10. bence8810 Says:

    Dear Sohaib,
You need a VM service from the provider definitely for this to work. All providers have a VM number to call, usually a very simple number like 111 or 170 etc, and that is what you program with my above mentioned method into the iPhone.

When pressing the Voicemail button on the iPhone, it will simply call up that number and from there on you are on your own. So its much like a shortcut to a one-button dial. Originaly the iPhone has the Visual VM service where it displayes all voicemails in a different bubble and keeps the voice files on your phone to re-listen at any time. If you are using an “unsupported” carrier, all you can do is to have a shortcut to your voice mail.

    Cheers

    Ben

Glad it works for most of you guys. Where it doesn’t work, I am afraid I don’t know what to suggest. Some carriers’ voice mail service might differ from the usual standard.

Unable to get to work on iPhone4 for a third party normal phone no. I use Hullomail (brings visual voicemail to carriers that dont support it), great service, SMS & email notification and iPhone app. Would just be nice to get the voicemail button to dial the standard UK phone number it needs to access the hullomail service on the odd time you do it that way.
